Since Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn is going to stick to the pay to play business model, many have been wondering if prepaid cards will be offered to give players without a credit card a chance to enjoy the game.
While no official announcement has been made (to my knowledge the last time we heard about it was in 2010, related to the original Final Fantasy XIV), looks like Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn Prepaid Cards are actually a thing, as they just appeared on the websites of multiple retailers.
For now we can find them on the French Square Enix Boutique, and on Amazon Italy, GameStop Italy,Amazon Germany, Gamestop Germany, Amazon Spain and EBGames Australia. Each card comes with sixty days of game time and has a recommended price of 25,98 € in Europe or 39.95 Australian Dollars in the land of koalas. The indicated release date is the same as the game: August the 27th.
While the availability of prepaid cards hasn’t been officially conformed by Square Enix, we can definitely assume that they’re real since the French Square Enix Boutique is an official SE website and almost all the retailers show a full package shot (in different languages) that is too elaborate to be a placeholder. The only funny detail is that the Spanish Amazon site has the localized pack shot in Italian.
It has to be noted that all the retailers that offer the cards so far belong to the European region, since for most of the game industry and for Square Enix in particular Australia is part of Europe (I know, right?), so we’ll have to wait for further details before assuming that the prepaid cards will be offered in North America as well.
Below you can see the pack shot in . It’s likely that, if the cards were to be offered in North America, the package would be different just like the game’s box art.
